F.A.Q.s

Q: What is Smoothcomp? A: Smoothcomp is a FANTASTIC tournament platform (online software) for all combat sports (see more below).

Q: Is Smoothcomp perfect? A: No. Nothing is perfect. However, it does streamline a lot of tournament operations, saving everyone a lot of time.

Q: Why are there no "Walk In" Competitors allowed? A: On average (at Snow Slam), we had about 30 "walk ins" per year. It takes time to create a Smoothcomp profile, more time to register athletes in events and even more time to re-seed all the brackets with the new athlete (let's say 10 minutes, it's way more but just for a round number). Now multiply that by 30 (30x10mins = 300 extra minutes = 5 hours of data entry). Even split between 5 people, that's an extra hour (but probaby more) of time and too much work! It is much easier to re-seed pre-registered competitors if an athlete cancels one or all the events they had registered in (this is done automatically). A tournament host can choose to allow walk in competitors, but it creates A LOT of unnecessary extra work. If you know you want to compete, just pre-register! We have a refund/cancelation policy if you can't make it.

Q: What are the benefits of using Smoothcomp (what was wrong with the old way)? A: Smoothcomp eliminates the use of paper (and calculators and stopwatches), creates brackets/ divisions automatically, gives a clear view of scores and time clock to spectators, fully customizable, fully editable, gives an up-to-the-minute schedule of matches, enables Live Streaming, tracks athletes, clubs and their records (eliminating data entry for organizations such as SMAA). Tournaments listed on the Smoothcomp calendar are visible to everyone on the planet and are sorted by distance to your location. It will help you book a hotel if needed, keep you informed of your athletes matches, walk your dog and do your taxes (just kidding about dogs and taxes). We are confident that once someone sees how Smoothcomp runs, they will be sold, and we envision ALL combat tournaments moving towards this platform in the near future.

Q: I registered as a __________ belt but was promoted to a higher _______ belt, can I change my registration? A: Yes. Edits can be made all the way up until registration close -> March 1st, 2023 @23:59

Q: I don't like change or technology, should I boycott your tournament? A: No. Give it a try first. As mentioned before, we envision all tournaments moving to this platform, so you can fear change, but eventually you will have no tournaments to compete in.

Q: May I buy spectator tickets in advance for other people? A: Yes! You can buy up to 25 extra admission tickets for friends and family along with your athlete's registration or by way of email. Make a comment at checkout or email us spectator names and they will have tickets waiting at the admission table!

Q: May I order advance tickets and have my friends/family pay at the door? A: No. There is no point in ordering advance tickets as they will be charged door price anyway.

Q: How do I get my Coupon Code? A: Send us an email with all the coupons you qualify for, and we'll send you the best code for your value! [email protected]

Q: I would like to volunteer at your tournament, how would I go about doing that? A: We welcome all the help we can get, many hands make light work, so if you're willing to help, we'll find you a spot and you'll also receive a coupon code for your athlete's registration! Send us an email, FB message, call or text and we'll put you on the list. On tournament day, look for the schedule posted at the venue.

Q: Is there another way to compete at your tournament (I'm not good with technology)? A: Sorry, NO. All athletes need a Smoothcomp profile (free to create) in order to register to compete at Snow Slam. We can help you through the whole process if you need, including adding your athlete!

Q: May I register now and pay at the door? A: No. Payment must be received before March 1, 2023, to ensure athlete is approved. Email reminders will go out on March 1st for any missing payments.

Q: May I pay for all my athletes registered in my club? A: Yes. Email us for your coupon codes (one per household) or have your athlete's create profiles/ register and choose e-transfer at checkout (add notes where needed). We will review all registrations for accuracy and discounts (including spectator tickets) and send confirmation of the total for your club. Once payment is received, all your athletes will be approved.

Q: I'm having trouble with registration (one kind or another), who can help me? A: This is our first full scale tournament using the platform, but we've been playing with it for months (including a trial in-house tournament), so we can help you make it through one way or another. Call/ text 306.621.1555

Q: I can't find my style/ belt rank to add to my profile, what now? A: Smoothcomp was originally created for BJJ but since has added other styles. We have requested the admin to add missing styles and rank systems to accommodate more combat sports. We have ensured that although there are ranks to choose from in each event, styles are not mandatory to register.

Q: Do I need to join an academy (club) in my profile? A: No. If you train at a specific club (or 2 or 3) you can ask your coach to create the academy on Smoothcomp. If you train by yourself and not at a club, leave that part blank and just ensure you're following the rules we set out for each event you compete in. If it asks what club you will represent at Snow Slam, enter a club name or create a name for where you train.

Q: Do I have to be an SMAA member to compete at Snow Slam? A: No. Although our tournament is sanctioned by the SMAA, competing athletes only have to follow the rules.

Q: What is the procedure when I arrive? A: Upon arrival, proceed inside the building (west entrance M.C. Knoll) and make your way to one of our "check in" lines. The volunteer will help check in your athlete(s) and spectators, stamp hands and send you all through admission where spectators without a stamp or ticket will pay admission (cash or debit). That's it! Competitors can get changed into uniform and spectators can go find a seat in the bleachers.

Q: Should I bring cash? A: Spectators can pay with cash or debit. Once most check ins/ admissions are complete, the debit machine will move to the head table where spectators can use for 50/50 tickets. Or bring cash. There will be a canteen and cash is great for getting snacks, food and drinks.

Q: We're going to arrive late; can we still check in? A: As long as the athlete's division has NOT started, check ins will be allowed. Find Master Forster at the Head Table by the podiums for late check ins.

Q: I have friends/ family that cannot be at Snow Slam, is there a way for them to watch? A: We are working on Live Streams for each ring and podiums, so if we get it running, there will be a PPV option for Live Streams. Just let your friends know which ring to watch!

Q: I noticed my athlete has been seeded in the wrong spot, who can I ask for a change? A: Contact for Snow Slam is Master Forster, and he will help resolve any bracket/ seeding problems.

Q: I want to run MY tournament on Smoothcomp, how do I get started? A: We can help, or you can use the support documents found on this site AND the admin guys are super helpful and easy to work with! Keep in mind that the admin guys live in Sweden which is a VERY different time zone (unless you live close to Sweden).

Q: Do you require sponsors? A: Any sponsorship is greatly appreciated, see our Sponsor page.

Q: I have more questions than were listed, who can I ask? A: Contact Master Forster. email: [email protected]. Call/ text 306.621.1555
